Correcting the Compass

The last section introduced you to variation and how it affects the compass. This section examines deviation, a source of compass error caused by magnetism within the boat, and how it affects steering compass readings. This error, along with variation, can be converted to produce true headings, true bearings and true courses.

The objective of this section is to learn the characteristics of deviation and two methods of correcting, or converting, readings to get to true. The examples should be worked through as it may take a while to become familiar with the conversion process. Coverage of Sail Canada's performance objective 9 is found in this section as well as Section 3.
