Section 4
Correcting the Compass
The last section introduced you to variation and how it affects
the compass. This section examines deviation, a
source of compass error caused by magnetism within the boat,
and how it affects steering compass readings. This error, along
with variation, can be converted to produce true headings, true
bearings and true courses.
The objective of this section is to learn the characteristics
of deviation and two methods of correcting, or converting, readings
to get to true. The examples should be worked through as it may
take a while to become familiar with the conversion process.
Coverage of Sail Canada's performance objective 9 is found in this section
as well as Section 3. |
